Withings Smart Activity Tracker

The Withings Smart Activity Tracker sets itself apart from the competition by including a swipe-able touch screen and a heart rate monitor in a slender device weighing  just 8 grams.

Withings Smart Activity Tracker: steps, distance, calories burned, sleep tracking and a heart rate monitor in one device

Withings is best known for bringing out the WiFi enabled Withings Body Scale. The Withings Smart Activity Tracker is a complementary device to the scale that tracks steps, distance, calories burned, sleep hours, and sleep quality.

The Withings Smart Activity Tracker differentiates from other fitness tracking devices, including the current generation of Fitbit devices (as of January 2013), by incorporating heart rate monitoring into the same sleek device. The Withings Smart Activity Tracker is a perfect complementary device to the Withings family of Wireless Weight Scales and Blood Pressure Monitor (both sold separately).

Not to be left behind the Fitbit One and Fitbit Zip, the Withings Smart Activity Tracker also uses Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth Smart for wireless syncing in the background with a companion mobile app.

Talking of which, a relative shortcomings of the Withings Body Scale was that it came with a WiScale app that didn’t integrate with other activity tracking devices. To see your weight, sleep and calories burned metrics in a unified dashboard meant you had to find a third-party app, like MyFitnessPal, that integrated with both the Withings scale and your activity tracker of choice. Withings remedied the situation by releasing the Withings Health Mate app, which acts as a unified dashboard for the Withings Body Scale as well as other devices you connect to it, such as the Zeo for sleep tracking and BodyMedia for activity tracking. Fitbit was a puzzling absence from the list of devices you could add to the Withings Health Mate app. With the announcement of the Withings Smart Activity Tracker at CES 2013 the Fitbit’s exclusion became suddenly obvious: Withings is competing with Fitbit*.

* In a similar vein, when Fitbit introduced the Fitbit Aria scale to compete with the Withings Body Scale, they degraded their integration with the Withings scale inside the Fitbit app

The Withings Smart Activity Tracker will reportedly be supplied with a wristband, armband and belt clip.
